Tokenized assets as collateral

A lender needs more than a token price. Use this decision tree to examine holder rights, valuation, transfer restrictions, and the route for realizing collateral after default.

Conceptual illustration for Tokenized assets as collateral

A token can be transferable and still be poor loan collateral. A lender needs the holder's rights, valuation method, eligible receivers, and a credible route to cash after default.

Tokenization does not change an asset's fundamental risk or automatically make it eligible collateral. The decision belongs to the actual lender, manager, legal advisers, and facility terms.

TORQ can express supported eligibility and valuation policies. It does not replace those judgments.

Four collateral checks.

  1. 1. Identify the claim.

Document the issuer, legal wrapper, holder rights, recourse, custody, and any party whose failure could impair the claim. A token balance alone is not the answer.

  2. 2. Test transfer and control.

Check whether the borrower may pledge the asset, whether the lender can obtain or maintain control, and whether an eligible buyer or receiver could accept it after default.

  3. 3. Choose a defensible valuation.

Name the price or NAV source, update schedule, outlier rules, stale-data response, and difference between a reported value and an executable sale price.

  4. 4. Prove an exit route.

Identify possible sale, redemption, or workout paths, their timing, transfer restrictions, expenses, and the actor authorized to use them.

Decision flow through claim, control, valuation, and exit, ending in facility-specific review rather than automatic approval.
A missing answer at any gate changes the proposed limit or stops the review. A token's market capitalization does not fill that gap.

A hypothetical asset that looks liquid until default.

Consider Token X, an interest in a fund with daily reported NAV. It transfers only among approved institutions.

Its issuer offers redemption after notice, and there is no dependable secondary-market bid for a forced sale. These are invented facts for the example.

A lender cannot safely equate daily NAV with cash available today. The credit review needs the redemption terms, eligible receiver list, any suspension rights, and an independently assessed realization period.

If a borrower defaults before the notice period ends, the lender may have a legal claim but limited near-term cash.

A facility could decline Token X, set a lower advance rate, require additional collateral, or wait for better evidence. The correct outcome depends on the lender's mandate and the asset's actual documents.

This article does not recommend a universal haircut.

The evidence package an issuer can prepare.

  • The governing documents that define the token holder's rights and transfer restrictions.
  • The issuer and custody chain, including responsibilities when a service provider fails.
  • NAV or price methodology, source timestamps, challenge process, and historical exceptions.
  • Redemption, sale, or workout procedures with eligible counterparties and realistic timing.
  • Corporate actions, fees, taxes, and other events that could change net proceeds.

How a facility should express the decision.

A supported TORQ credit facility connects approved collateral to a valuation path, borrower limits, liquidation conditions, and scoped authority. The configured policy should represent a completed credit decision, not act as a substitute for one.

The current product positioning supports governed overcollateralized borrowing against approved digital or tokenized collateral. It does not establish that every tokenized asset, tokenized stock, repo instrument, or securities-lending arrangement is supported.

Read documentation

No. The underlying rights, control, valuation, counterparty exposure, and realizable exit still require review.
